On 25 November 1987, in the late hours of the night Major Ramaswamy Parameshwaran was returning from a search operation in Sri Lanka, when his column was ambushed by a group of militants. With cool courage and presence of mind, he encircled the militants from the rear and boldly charged taking them completely by surprise. During the hand to hand battle, one of the militants shot him in the chest. Undaunted and unmindful of the grave injury, Major Parameshwaran snatched the rifle from the militant. In that condition, Maj Parameshwaran, displayed conspicuous bravery and made the supreme sacrifice by laying down his life.
