KUMAON NAGA REGIMENTS

Foreword

It is a matter of great privilege and honour for me to welcome you to the website of the elite “Kumaon and Naga Regiments”.

The Kumaon Regiment has its origin in the contingents of Nizam of Hyderabad and has a history of over 220 years. The Kumaon Regiment is one of the oldest, largest and most decorated regiments of the Indian Army. Today the Regiment has one of the largest number of Battalions to include a Scouts Battalion, Territorial Army Battalions and RR Battalions. The glorious history of the Regiment spanning over two hundred twenty years is a saga of valours and
triumphs which are unparalled  in  the history of Indian Army. Major Somnath Sharma of Kumaon Regiment was the first person to be awarded Param Vir Chakra in 1948 Jammu & Kashmir operations.

Eleven generations of Indians and at least eight of British have given the best part of their lives in upholding its tradition of courage, fortitude, devotion, resolve and camaraderie. Many of its noble sons have attained martyrdom while fighting under its Colours in various parts of the world.

In deference to the aspirations of the people of Nagaland, the Naga Regiment was raised and was affiliated to the Kumaon Regiment. The youngest Regiment of the Indian Army has already given commendable account of its prowess, both in peace and war. The Regiment has affiliated to it a Rashtriya Rifles and Infantry Battalion (TA) (Home & Hearth).

Valour, gallantry, sacrifice and professional excellence are a tradition in both the Regiments; and courage, fortitude, devotion, perseverance and camaraderie are their dominant virtues. To get an insight of our glorious history, rich traditions and fine values, please surf through this web site.

Your feedback will be deeply appreciated.

Lieutenant General NC Marwah, PVSM, AVSM

Colonel of the Kumaon and Naga Regiments
and the Kumaon Scouts
