Project AWAN was conceptualised as a Wide Area Network to replace the legacy messaging system AMSS and to provide a standard multilevel secure messaging system across the Army at the desktop of the user. The contract for the project was signed with M/s Tata Infotech on 25 Mar 04 and the project was dedicated to the Nation by the Hon'ble President of India on 24 Feb 06.
