He was one of the pioneer of The Brigade of The Guards on its raising in 1949. He commanded GUARDS (RAJPUT) during its United Nation’s deployment at Gaza. During his illustrious career spanning over five decades, the General Officer holds the distinction of many a prestigious command/staff/instructional appointment. He was first Indian Adjutant of Indian Military Academy, Dehradun. He held the appointments of Deputy Director General, Military Operation, General Officer Commanding Division and Corps in Northern Sector, Commandant, Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, Quarter Master General, Integrated Headquarters of Ministry of Defence (Army), before he retired as the General Officer Commanding -in-Chief, Northern Command.
His professional acumen brought significant military successes to his division in the 1971 operations, for which he was awarded the Param Vishisth Seva Medal. For his overall excellence in defence matters, he was also awarded PADMA BHUSHAN on 26 Jan 1983 - a rare award for a soldier.
