The institute of Military Law (IML), is a unique and only institute for training Military personnel in various branches of Military law and the administration of justice in its Courts. it was initially located at Shimla for a short duration. However, subsequently on 26  Aug 1989. Its motto is Vidhi Gyanam Pradhanam (Knowledge of law is Supreme). The institute is manned by officers belonging to the judge Advocate Generals Department.

 Role

• Impart basic knowledge of military and allied laws to officers of all arms and services, Navy, Para-Military Forces and Foreign Countries.
• Train young officers of the JAG's Department in the onerous duties of judge Advocate.
• Train judge Advocates in their role as legal advisors to the senior Commanders.
• Encourage research and higher studies in the filed of military law.
• Train officers in legal duties, enabling them to act as prosecutors and defending officers at Courts-Martial.
• Educate senior officers in diverse legal functions of middle level commanders and staff offices.
• Publish bi-annual law journal of national prominence titled Military Law journal and the Departmental News Letter.
