Army Averts Tragedy in Turtuk
 
 
1.     Army personnel averted a major tragedy, on 27 May 10, in Turtuk area of Nubra valley, by evacuating school children trapped in a major landslide.  A school bus carrying fifteen school children to Army Goodwill School, Tyakshi, was trapped in a landslide at approximately 0945 hrs. The prompt response and rescue operation by the army, to extricate the children from the landslide averted a major catastrophe.

2.     Eleven of the children, who were seriously injured, were rescued in quick time, by the army jawans, with complete disregard to their personal safety. The army medical team also rushed to the site and despite continuing landslides,  provided immediate first aid and treatment to the injured children. 


3.     Three Army helicopters evacuated the injured children to a Military Hospital at Hunder. The army doctors evacuated three of the more serious children, with critical head injuries, by helicopter to Leh, since no CT scan facilities were available at Hunder. An army surgeon performed a life saving emergent surgery on Master Faizullah, 6 yrs, son of Sanaullah. Faizullah had sustained serious open head injury with depressed skull fracture and was in no condition to be air-evacuated. Yet another emergent surgery was perfomed on Master Shamim, 10 yrs, son of Anayatullah, since he had a blunt trauma chest causing haemopneumothorax with multiple rib fractures and lung contusion, which could have led to a respiratory failure. Both surgeries were performed without the support of advanced diagnostic instruments. These children are now stable and under medical supervision of the army doctors.
 
4.     The daring rescue of the ill fated children by the Army, timely medical assistance, and air evacuation by Army & Air Force helicopters saved the lives of these young children in the Nubra valley of Ladakh. This act of the defence forces has further strengthened the military-civil ties in the area.
