Army Rescue Operation: Parichha Thermal Plant

1.     An accident involving a chimney collapse occurred at Parichha Thermal Power Plant, Jhansi at approximately 1345 hrs, on 24 May 10. The construction work of the two chimneys, meant for 250 MW power plants, was carried out by a Public Sector Company. Due to a massive thunder storm with high winds, one of the chimneys, about 220 meters in height, gave way and caved in. A few persons, who were having lunch, in the shadow of the chimney, were trapped under the debris.

2.     The local formation assisted the local administration in rescue operations at Parichha Thermal Power Plant. The major task for rescue operations consisted of breaking down the remnants of structure, especially a wall about 50m high, for clearing an access to the site, so that people buried could be evacuated. The work continued throughout the night. Heavy recovery vehicles cleared the access to the site, while Army personnel made their way cautiously to find the trapped labourers. Finally, after having operated relentlessly for more than 30 hours, a dead body was recovered on the morning of 26 May 10.

3.     With the arrival of more sophisticated excavating material on 26 May 10, the army team withdrew. The timely help & immediate response to aid the civil populace was deeply appreciated by the public of Jhansi as well as by the civil administration.
