AIM of AWWA

The aim of the Army Wives Welfare Association is to support and enhance the official welfare efforts within the army, focusing especially on the welfare of families, children and widows of all ranks and retired personnel of the army and also to take active part in the activation of central and state governments in their efforts towards national re-construction aimed at improving the living conditions of rural poor amongst the above category of persons and protecting the human rights violation of the army personnel and their families.
Objective : National AWWA

  • Reaching out to the widows and help them establish themselves.
  • Rehabilitation of battle casualties.
  • Running of special school for handicapped children of army personal.
  • Provide vocational training to families.
  • Award scholarship to meritorious & needy children.
  • Mother & child care.
  • Welfare of patients in hospital.
  • Family health & hygiene.
  • Family support & counseling programmes.
  • Relief and rehabilitation of widows and children.
  • Promotion of human rights of army personals & their families.
Registration of Eastern Command AWWA

Eastern Command AWWA was registered with registrar of societies of West Bengal on 09 Mar 1976, on submission of :-

(A) Memorandum of Association, which defined the objectives & organisation of
     Eastern Command AWWA

(B) Regulations of Association of Eastern Command AWWA which has rules for
     the Executive Committee

The objectives of this Registered Association as per the Memorandum are :-

  • Army families’ welfare.
  • Other ranks’ welfare.
  • Military hospital patients’ welfare.
  • Officers’ and their families’ welfare.
  • Ex-Servicemens’ welfare.
  • To do all things as may be deemed incidental or conducive to the attainment of the foregoing objectives.

INAUGURATION OF AWWA HELPLINE IN KOLKATA

Mrs Mala Jamwal, President AWWA, Eastern Command, inaugurated the AWWA helpline in Kolkata at Strand Road Gate (St George’s Gate), Fort William, on 12 May 2007.

ASHA means Hope. Asha School, Kolkata for the challenged children was established on 22 Sep 1992 under parent NGO AWWA Eastern Command.  The aim of the institution is to help the children with various disabilities by providing them with skill so that they can stand on their own feet and be a useful learning member of the society.

At present there are seventy two students with various disabilities like Cerebral Palsy, Mental retardation, Autism, Hearing Impairment and multiple disabilities who undergo regular education and therapy; in addition there are twenty four very young children who are managed under the early intervention programme as they are too young for on
re-employment options in the Army. To expedite the grievances of Veer Naris and other Army wives the matter would be referred to the concerned officers of HQ Eastern Command and HQ Bengal Area for speedy disposal of grievances.

Mrs Mausami Chakraborti a widow herself has been appointed as the counsellor in the helpline and she will be assisted in her endeavors by the AWWA staff of Eastern Command.

ASHA SCHOOL, KOLKATA

A HOPE FOR THE CHALLENGED CHILDREN

ASHA means Hope. Asha School, Kolkata for the challenged children was established on 22 Sep 1992 under parent NGO AWWA Eastern Command.  The aim of the institution is to help the children with various disabilities by providing them with skill so that they can stand on their own feet and be a useful learning member of the society.

At present there are seventy two students with various disabilities like Cerebral Palsy, Mental retardation, Autism, Hearing Impairment and multiple disabilities who undergo regular education and therapy; in addition there are twenty four very young children who are managed under the early intervention programme as they are too young for school education.

Children in ASHA School are exposed to various developmental, vocational, therapies including speech, play, dance and music therapy apart from special education and functional academic and also when required put through occupational and physiotherapy.

This school has highly trained staff specific for challenged children.  This includes special educators, including one for the Hearing Impaired.  In addition there are also an occupational therapist, music and dance teacher, arts & crafts teacher, drawing teacher who train these children in various disciplines.  The staff strives for further professional up gradation by attending various workshops, EMEs in and around Kolkata.

The school is financially managed under the auspices of parent NGO i.e. AWWA Eastern Command and the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, there has been a significant increase in the financial help extended by these in the past 3-4 years. ASHA School, Kolkata gives much more than HOPE.

It imparts confidence, moral values, skills, formal education while minimizing disabilities.  It strives to wipe off the barriers between the able bodied and differently abled.
