LADYSMITH SHELL FIRING COMPETITION
The ladysmith Shell is historically linked with the Boer War. A small party of British troops including some members of the Indian Ordnance Department were ambushed at a place called Ladysmith in South Africa during the Boer War. On 27 Dec 1899, a shell was fired into the besieged Ordnance Field Park as a Christmas greeting. Inside was found a small piece of plum pudding wrapped up in a tiny Union Jack. The shell itself was painted with the words “Compliments of the Season”.
An Inter-depot pistol shooting competition for all Ordnance Officers in India was started in 1903 to commemorate this incident. The winners were presented the shell which is mounted on a wooden pedestal and bears the names of members of the Indian Ordnance Department who formed part of the Garrison. In 1953 it was decided that the original shell with its mounting should stay permanently at the AOC School Jabalpur and a silver replica be presented to the winners of the Competition.
