Hav Harminder Singh of AOC Centre won a bronze medal in men’s 20 km walk event to give the country its second medal in athletics in the Commonwealth Games (CWG) in New Delhi on 09 Oct 2010.

Harminder clocked 1:23.27s, better than his personal best of 1:24.23s, to finish third behind Australians Jared Talent (1:22.18s), who won bronze in 2008 Beijing Olympics, and Luke Adams (1:22.31s) who was the silver medallist in 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games.

The 26-year-old, who recently shifted to 20km walk from 50km walk race, missed Babu Bhai Panucha’s national record of 1:23.06s by a few seconds. At the Asian Championship in Japan this March, he finished fifth, just behind Babubhai.

Harminder became the first Indian to win a medal in walk race competition in Commonwealth Games. He is also the only fifth Indian to win CWG medal in athletics after Milkha Singh (gold in men’s 440yard race in 1958), Praveen Kumar (silver in men’s hammer throw in 1966), Mohinder Singh Gill (bronze in men’s triple jump in 1970; silver in men’s triple jump in 1974) and Suresh Babu (bronze in men’s long jump in 1978).

CRICKET

Col Chinmaya Sharma has had the rare honour of playing in the Services Cricket team in 53 Ranji Trophy matches spanning over 15 years and scored over 3000 runs. He is now associated with cricket at National Level as Match Referee on the panel of BCCI for all domestic tournaments.
 


WEIGHT LIFTING

Hav Amarnath created a new National Record by lifting 100kgs in Jerk in Bantam Weight.

Nk Mehar Chand represented Services at National Level from 1975 to 1981 and was the services champion in Middle Weight Class in 1975, 1976 and 1979/80 and Light Heavy Weight Class in 1990. Winner of three Gold Medals he marked three National records during National Weight Lifting Championship held in Delhi during Mar 1981.



Sub Maj Piara Singh represented India as a Coach-Cum-Manager in Olympic Games 1980 held at Moscow. He is National Coach and Class 1 Referee of India Weight Lifting Federation. He also represented Services at National level during the year 1960-63. He has many firsts to his credit.

Nk Antony Navis of the AOC won the first medal for India at the Edinburgh Commonwealth Games in 1970 in the feather weight class. He lifted 335 kgs. Since 1967 he had been consistently representing Services in the National Games. He won the Gold Medal at the National Games at Cuttack in 1970.



Sub Maj (Hony Capt) Mehar Chand Bhasker, VSM, towered at 1982, 1986 Asian and Common Wealth Games and the Afro Asian Federation Games. Arjuna Awardee in 1985. He won the following medals for various Wt-Lifting Championships:- three Services, ten National, four SAF, One Commonwealth and One Asian Games Gold Medals besides a number of Silvers & Bronzes.


ATHLETICS

 Standing 6’4” tall, Capt (Now Maj Retd) Joginder Singh established the Asian record of 16.22 metres in the 5th Asian Games held at Bangkok in 1966. He later improved his record and held the national record which he established in 1970 at the National Games at Cuttack with a heave of 17 metres. This officer was awarded the Arjuna Award in 1969 by the President for being the best sportsman for the year 1968 in Athletics. He represented the Services since 1960. He was selected to lead the indian Contingent to Munich in the indo German meet. He has led the National Athletic Team in the international Athletics Meet thrice.

Nb/Sub Raj Singh has represented Services from 1966 to 1980 in Athletics. He established a Services’ record in Javelin Throw by throwing 70.18 meters during 1973. Winner of the National Gold Medal 9 times, has represented India in an Indo-German test during 1970 and won a Silver Medal.

TAEKWONDO
