COAS Awarded Legion of Merit

 

The COAS, General Bikram Singh, was conferred the prestigious US Military Legion of Merit (LOM) during his recent visit to the United States. The Legion of Merit is conferred on officers and enlisted men of the Armed Forces of the United States and on nationals of other countries who have distinguished themselves by exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding service. General Bikram Singh is the fifth Indian recipient of this prestigious honour. The LOM has been earlier conferred on Field Marshal KM Cariappa, General SM Shrinagesh, Admiral J Cursetji and General Rajendrasinhji.

 

C-in-C Myanmar Army Calls on COAS

 

Vice Senior General Soe Win, Deputy Commander–in-Chief of Myanmar Defence Service and Commander-in-Chief Myanmar Army visited the capital recently on a goodwill trip. He interacted with the COAS General Bikram Singh and also paid homage at Amar Jawan Jyoti during the visit.
 

 

COAS Reviews IMA Passing out Parade

 

617 Gentlemen Cadets and 71 Foreign Gentlemen Cadets from friendly foreign countries passed out from the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun on 14 December 2013. The Gentlemen Cadets displayed tremendous enthusiasm, vigour and zeal, putting up an excellent parade before the Reviewing Officer (RO), Hon’ble Defence Minister, Shri AK Antony, and the COAS. The parade marched to the tunes of `Col Bogey’ and `Sare Jahan Se Achha’. The Sword of Honour for overall best performance amongst the Passing Out Course was awarded to Gentleman Cadet Akshat Joshi who was commissioned into the Parachute Regiment and the Gold Medal for standing First in the Overall Order of Merit was awarded Gentleman Cadet Kamlesh Mani who was commissioned into the Brigade of Guards.

UN Citation Awarded to Indian Battalion Group

 

The Force Commander’s Unit Citation was awarded to the Indian Battalion-1/XX (16 JAT with a Mechanised Infantry Company of 6 GUARDS) recently. The Indian Battalion has been serving in the Democratic Republic of Congo since October 2012 as part of the United Nation Organisation Stabilisation Mission in the DRC (MONUSCO). In a hostile and unpredictable environment, the Battalion Group carried out extrication and evacuation of approximately 250 personnel belonging to the UN, NGOs and local government authorities. The well-Knit team of INDBATT-1/XX, spread over an area of 6300 square km strived hard to inculcate empathy with the locals which contributed significantly towards peacekeeping.

 

Indo-Seychelles Joint Exercise

 

Exercise LAMITYE 2013, the 6th Indo-Seychelles Joint Training Exercise was conducted from 05 to 17 December at Mahe, Seychelles. The aim of the Exercise was to improve interoperability between both Armies in fighting insurgency terrorism under an United Nations mandate. The Indian contingent comprised of a platoon from an Infantry Battalion and representatives from the Para Brigade. The Joint Exercise culminated with ‘Exercise BRAVE HEART’, a two day outdoor Exercise conducted at Cape Ternay in the backdrop of anti piracy environment to include, cordon and search operations and hostage rescue operations. Mr Thanglura Darlong, the High Commissioner of India appreciated the efforts of the Indian Army contingent and emphasized the need for India to continue providing the necessary support to Seychelles.

Army Hoists Highest National Flag in Ladakh

 

The Indian Army, in association with the Flag Foundation of India, held a grand ceremony to hoist the world’s highest National Flag at Lukung, Ladakh Region recently. The tricolour was hoisted on a 105 feet tall flag mast by Major General AS Bedi, General Officer Commanding, Infantry Division, to commemorate the supreme sacrifice made by our brave soldiers during the 1962 war with China in Chusul Sector. The size of the flag itself was 30 feet by 20 feet, and it swirled at an altitude of 14600 feet on the banks of Pangong Tso Lake. The flag is a homage to the bravery and sacrifice of the Indian Army soldiers.

 

A Humanitarian Project by Tiger Hill Brigade

 

Miss Kunjus Dolma, a 20 year old girl from Village Darchiks, located in a remote corner of Ladakh region had a major misalignment in both her eyes since childhood, lowering her self-confidence and esteem. At this stage, the Army extended a helping hand to bring a ray of hope in her life. A humanitarian aid project was conceived by the Tiger Hill Brigade and 9 KUMAON to provide treatment through a renowned civil surgeon. After treatment, the girl has regained her self esteem and acquired a new direction in her life.

Summary of Operations

 

Conduct of people friendly operations with focus on surgical intelligence based operations against insurgents and terrorist groups in the region, has kept the situation peaceful and under control. Eight terrorists were killed, 70 apprehended and seven surrendered to the SF during the period. In addition, six OGWs of various outfits have also been arrested. 90 weapons of all types have been recovered during the period apart from recovery of 14 bombs/ IEDs/grenades. Inter factional clashes have led to the killing of four and injury to three cadres of various outfits.

 

Army Mela at Lachung

 

Shakti Vijay Brigade recently initiated a step to encourage the children of Government Junior High School, Lachung, to know their Army. Commander of the Shakti Vijay Brigade interacted with the children and motivated them to join the Indian Army. A drawing competition was organised for the children and educational gifts were given away. The school teachers were also felicitated for their yeoman service in grooming the future of our Nation. Such events go a long way in fostering bonds of mutual appreciation between the Army and the locals.

 

Eco Awareness Campaign at Kupup

 

On the auspicious occasion of ‘Eco Awareness Day’ and in pursuance of the Indian Army’s commitment to conserve nature, a camp cum interactive session was organised by the troops of Trishakti Corps at Kupup (East Sikkim) recently. Army personnel, local civilian dignitaries and local villagers participated in the camp. The villagers displayed keen interest and enthusiasm towards the lecture on ecological awareness and also expressed their views on maintenance of ecological balance. The local populace lauded the effort of the Indian Army in conservation of environment and protecting the nature.

 

Royal Riders Rally Flagged Off

 

Maj Gen Rajeev Chopra, IG AR (South) flagged off the second leg of the Royal Riders Bike Rally as part of the Sangai festival. The festival strives to showcase the diversity of the State. The Royal Riders are the messengers of brotherhood and peace who take up philanthropic activities like goodwill tours, rallies, charitable events such as health and environment, child rights, disaster management art and culture. Assam Rifles reiterated its commitment towards promotion of the spirit of peace and brotherhood.

 

Daredevils Smash Three World Records

 

The Dare Devils team successfully established a World Record of ‘Largest Human Motorcycle Pyramid’ with 304 men on 13 motorcycles covering a distance of 200 m. The second world record was created by Havildar M Ramesh for ‘Most consecutive Yoga Positions on a moving motorcycle without Stopping’. by doing 50 Yoga positions on a running motorcycle and covering a distance of 5 Kms without touching the ground for 18.04 minutes. A brand new record for ‘Longest Jump Over Lying Persons’ was set by the Team Captain, Captain Abhayjit Mehlawat by jumping over 51 persons and covering a distance of 44.10 m while taking off from a ramp. All three records have been attempted and completed as per stipulations of the Guinness Book of Records, Limca Book of Records, Asia Books of Records and India Book of Records.

 

POP- OTA Gaya

 

The fourth passing out parade of Officers Training Academy Gaya took place on 14 December 2013. Vice Senior General Soe Win, Deputy Commander-in-Chief Defence Services Myanmar and Commander-in-Chief Myanmar Army reviewed the parade. Dressed in crisp ceremonial uniform, the Gentleman Cadets marched smartly to inspiring martial tunes and displayed excellent drill during the passing out parade. A total of 40 Gentleman Cadets of SCO Course were commissioned into various regiments of the Indian Army. In addition, 132 Gentleman Cadets of TES 28 successfully completed their basic military training to proceed to their respective Cadets Training Wing (Pune, Mhow and Secunderabad) for further technical training.

 

ABOD Awarded Trophy for Professionalism

 

Advance Base Ordnance Depot Suranasi, Jalandhar was awarded the coveted Lieutenant General RP Agarwal Trophy for the Best Regional Ordnance Depot for the Year 2013-14. Established in 1948, the Depot has strived relentlessly to perform well in all fields. The trophy is awarded on the basis of various parameters of professional and technical functioning and performance in administrative activities.

Eco-Warriors of CDM Meet the Air Warriors

 

The vibrant Eco-Club of College of Defence Management (CDM), Secunderabad took off on an Eco-Sortie with the air-warriors at Dindigul recently. The inspirational videos shown on arrival actually pumped up the adrenalin of the visitors from CDM and set the stage for the ecstatic flying they witnessed therafter. The children interacted with the budding rookie pilots and were also sensitized on the eco-aspects of flight safety. More than 200 persons were in attendence.
 

 

ISO Certification Awarded to Supply Depot

 

Lt Gen RP Sahi, GOC, Corps inaugurated a modernised fresh shed of Coy ASC (Sup) Type ‘F’ on 11 December. The Fresh Shed has been created akin to the retail sector with contemporary facilities extended to consumer units, while maintaining high quality standards of fresh rations entitled to the dependent troops. On the occasion, ISO 9001-2008 certification on quality management and logistic cover as ensured by the unit was also accredited.
 

 

Vijay Diwas Band Concert at Shillong

 

As part of the Vijay Diwas 2013, a band concert was held at the National Library, Shillong on 14 December in which bands from Assam Regimental Centre, 58 GTC and 8 ASSAM regaled the audience including a number of school children and NCC Cadets apart from civil dignitaries. The well coordinated band put up a scintillating show playing a number of martial, folk and movie tunes. The band concert was preceded by a motivational film and a talk by the representatives of Army, Navy and Air Force encouraging the young students to join the Services.
 

 

VIJAY DIWAS

 

Vijay Diwas commemorates the victory of the Indian Armed Forces leading to the historic surrender of over 93000 Pakistani soldiers and liberation of Bangladesh on 16 Dec 1971. This day epitomizes the dogged resolve of our Nation and fortitude of determined warriors of our Armed Forces as also serves as a poignant reminder of their supreme sacrifices. The 42nd anniversary of the war was commemorated to honour all our revered colleagues, our brave soldiers, sailors, airmen and civilians, who participated in this historic military feat and those, who in the line of duty made the supreme sacrifice. The credit for the success of Indian victory in 1971 Indo-Pak war goes to the Indian Armed Forces’ lightning offensive which out maneuvered the enemy. Homage was paid to the gallant soldiers of the Indian Armed Forces who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty, during a solemn wreath laying ceremony at the Amar Jawan Jyoti. The various commands also organized functions to commemorate this historic event.

Army Wins Laurels in 6th Asian Shooting Championship

 

As part of the ‘Mission Olympics’ programme, Army Marksmanship Unit, Mhow has been striving to score a bulls eye in international events. Army shooters have once again achieved stupendous results during the recently concluded 6th Asian Shooting Championship at Tehran, Iran. Army shooters bagged an impressive medal haul of 05 Gold, 10 Silver and 06 Bronze Medals. Sub Maj Vijay Kumar bagged the individual Gold Medal in 25 m Centre Fire Pistol event and Capt Raj Chaudhary won an individual Bronze Medal and team Silver Medal in 50 m Rifle Three Position event. In the Junior Category, Sepoy Arun won four medals.

 

Rowing Camp at Lavasa

 

Coaches and Rowers of the Army Rowing Node (ARN), Pune attended a training camp cum workshop on rowing at Lavasa recently. The workshop was conducted by the British rowing icon Sir Steve Redgrave, five times Olympic Gold medalist and nine times World Champion in rowing. The team benefitted tremendously through interaction with the rowing legend. Valuable advice on rowing nuances by Sir Steve Redgrave is being considered for incorporation in the training regimen of ARN to achieve further excellence by the oarsmen. 

 

Assam Rifles Wins Manipur Archery Championship

 

Assam Rifles Archery Team (ARAT) sustained its domination over the 24th Senior Manipur State Archery Championship 2013, by bagging 08 Gold, 08 Silver and 04 Bronze Medals. ARAT prevailed over all the opponents by wrapping brilliant results in all the events. Rifleman Sh Sanatomba Singh and Havildar N Subhachandra secured three Gold and three Silver Medals respectively, Rifleman Th Sanayaimai Singh secured one Gold in 70m recurve round and Rifleman H Bidyajit Singh clinched two Bronze in 70m and 30m event.

 

Trans Aravalli-Vindhyachal Hot Air Balloon Expedition

 

Central Command’s Hot Air Balloon Expedition from Jaipur to Jabalpur was flagged off from Jaipur by Brigadier Sudesh Pratap, Deputy General Officer Commanding and Station Commander of Jaipur on 10 December. The expedition traversed through two important hill ranges of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh namely the Aravallis and Vindhyachal, thus negotiating a distance of approximately 903 kilometers by cross country flying. The expedition also spread the message for afforestation of Aravallis and Vindhyachal hill ranges. The expedition comprised two hot air balloons, each having a capacity of 77,000 cubic feet, which carried a team of six well trained and highly experienced army personnel. Lt Gen RK Rana, GOC Madhya Bharat Area flagged in the expedition on 17 December at Jabalpur.

Self Defence Classes in Hissar

 

Self defence coaching classes were held at Army Public School, Hissar Cantt under the aegis of DOT Division from 02 to 17 December 2013. Mrs Kalpana Singh, Chairperson, DOT Division Family Welfare Organisation inaugurated the classes. Various lectures, demonstrations and a number of practice classes on self defence were conducted by a Haryana Police team. 85 ladies and girls of DOT Division attended the classes. An introductory movie on self defence was also screened for the participants during the classes. The classes were organised to teach all ladies and girls to defend themselves against various kinds of attack.

 

Senior Division of AR Public School, Keithelmanbi Inaugurated

 

The senior division of the Assam Rifles Public School, Keithelmanbi was inaugurated by Mrs Rashmi Chopra, President Assam Rifles Wives Welfare Association, HQ IGAR (South). The Assam Rifles Public School, Keithelmanbi has a special distinction wherein 60 percent of its students hail from the adjoining villages. The school is affiliated to CBSE and has been achieving 100% results since its inception. Assam Rifles has been committed to the cause of up-liftment of educational facilities and imparting quality education to students from remote areas of Manipur.

 

Computer Lab Established at Jabalpur

 

Central Command AWWA has facilitated the establishment of a state-of-art computer lab with 10 computers and requisite software at the CMM, Army Pre Primary School running under the aegis of Army Welfare Education Society. The school has been providing quality pre primary education to wards of, Army personnel as well as civilians. The School, through its sustained effort to improve the knowledge and skills of the toddlers has been striving to adopt modern teaching tools in sync with contemporary requirements.

 

‘Gyan Vigyan’ Science Exhibition Held at Kohima

 

An informative Science Exhibition ‘Gyan Vigyan’ was organised by the students of AR High School, Kohima recently. It was inaugurated by Mrs M M Naravane, President ARWWA, HQ IGAR (North) and attended by many parents who encouraged & supported the children. Under the able guidance of the teachers, the students exhibited their experiments and models with great enthusiasm and zeal. To make learning and observations more interesting and explicit, students had prepared information display boards. The event stimulated scientific spirit in the younger generation.
