Consequent to flooding of vast areas in Kurukshetra District, due to torrential rains on 06 and 07 Jul 2010, a flood relief column of the Army, out on patrolling in Thanesar was called in. At Village Jhansa, 17 kms North of Thanesar, a breach on the Southern Bank of Satluj Yamuna Link Canal (SYLC) was indicated by the worried villagers. Due to the surge in the waters, a portion of the brick lined bank was swept, causing parts of the adjoining road and masonry to cave into the canal, thus, creating a crater 20 ft long and 15 ft deep.

On reaching the spot, the Column Cdr, interacted with Shri Rajpal, the village sarpanch, and assessed the situation. As it was nearing night and relief material was not readily available, it was decided to commence work the next day. The Column Cdr also contacted Mr Pankaj Agarwal, DC Thanesar,who agreed to divert officials from the irrigation department, along with adequate repair material. On 09 Jul 10, the flood relief column reached the breach and took control of the situation.

The state authorities were contacted and the Executive Engineer of the Irrigation Department reached the site and was informed of the material required ,which was requisitioned immediately. The Army Engineers approached the breach through the canal to ensure safety of troops and village folk. With cajoling from the Sarpanch a few villagers also came ahead to help the troops working on the breach. Gradually, the breach was plugged with a combination of drainage pipes, earth work and sand bags.

When the Army column had arrived in the morning, the village folk had estimated that it would take about four days to plug in the breach, however, they were surprised to see the pace of work. By 1500 hours, the filling of the breach was completed and earthwork was done to level off the road on top.
