MONUSCO

UNITED NATIONS ORGANIZATION STABILIZATION MISSION IN THE DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO (MONUSCO)

 

 

1.      United Nations Organization Mission in DR Congo (MONUC) was established in July 1999. On 01 July 2010, the security council, renamed MONUC as United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) to reflect the new phase reached in the country post 2006 elections, with a changed mandate.

 

Mandate

 

2.      The United Nations Security Council adopted resolution number 2612 in December 2021 to continue the mission till December 2022. The following tasks are mandated : -

 

(a)     Protection of Civilians.

 

(b)     Support the Stabilization & Strengthening of State Institutions and Key Governance & Security Reforms.

 

Force Levels.   

 

3.      MONUSCO has an authorised troop ceiling of 13,500 military personnel, 660 military observers & staff officers, 591 police personnel & 1,050 personnel of formed police units &temporary deployment of an additional 360 personnel of formed police units.

         

Indian Deployment

 

4.      Since 2005, Indian Army has contributed 51 Infantry Battalion Groups in the mission. Currently 1910 Indian Army personnel including military observers & staff officers are deployed in the mission. The Indian Army contingents includes Headquarters Infantry Brigade Group with two Indian Battalions and Level III Hospital and Signals Company.
