1.      UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL)was established in March 1978.




2.      The United Nation Security Council adopted resolution number 2591 in August 2021 to continue the mission till August 2022. The following tasks are mandated :-


              (a)     Monitor the cessation of hostilities.

              (b)     Accompany and support Lebanese Armed Force (LAF).

(c)     Extend its assistance to help ensure humanitarian access to civil populations and safe return of displaced persons.

(d)     Assist the Government of Lebanon, at its request, in securing its borders and other entry points to prevent the entry in Lebanon without its consent of arms or related material.

(e)     Temporary & Special measure to support the Lebanese Armed Force (LAF) with   non-lethal materials and logistics support for a period of six months.


Force Deployment


3.      UNIFIL has an authorised troop ceiling of 10,351 military personnel from 46 Troop Contributing Countries, 240 International Civil Staff and 555 National Civil Staff with Maritime Task Force comprising of five Naval vessels and one helicopter.


Indian Deployment


4.      Since 1998, Indian Army has contributed 21 Infantry Battalion Groups in the mission. Currently, Indian Army is contributing 901 personnel including Staff Officers/ Military Observers. The Indian Army contingent includes one Infantry Battalion and one Indian Medical team.
