1.     Indian Army Mountaineering Expedition 2016 to Mt Thalaysagar (6904M) was conducted wef 19 Aug – 26 Sep 2016 in Gangotri Ranges of Uttrakhand in Western Garhwal Himalayas. The 24 member team led by Maj Jay Prakash Kumar successfully completed the expedition and returned safely after its first ascent.


2.     The expedition team was flagged off by Lt Gen AL Chavan, AVSM, SM, VSM, Director General of Military Training on 19 Aug 2016 from Army Adventure Wing, New Delhi. The team experienced many difficulties and challenges en-route wherein they fought against nature’s fury, negotiated deep crevasses, withstood snow blizzards and climbed near vertical rock and ice wall and brought laurels for Army and the nation by becoming the first team from Indian Army to summit the peak.


3.     On 17 Sep 2016, the team led by Maj Jay Prakash Kumar carved its way on extremely dangerous and treacherous vertical rock face with sheer determination and team spirit to reach the snow cap on top. Two of the climbing team members Hav Sonam Thinless and Nk Tashi Stanba successfully reached on top of majestic Mt Thalaysagar (6904M) at 0900 hrs.


4.     The team was ‘Flagged In’ by Maj Gen Ajay Sah, SM, VSM, Additional Director General of Military Training on 06 Oct 2016. The expedition has carved a niche and brought laurels since it was the first successful summit by Indian Army and only third by any Indian team so far. The expedition has kept the name of Army in high spirit and has opened flood gates for many such expeditions to the magnificent and technically difficult peak in future.
