A galvanized group of young garhwalis created history for the Garhwal Rifles when they were adjudged the ‘Best Marching Contingent’ on the Army Day Parade on 15 Jan 2013 at Army Parade Ground, Delhi Cantt and achieved Second Position in ‘Quarter Guard Competition’.

Value and enormity of this maiden achievement can only be fathomed by someone who has served in the Garhwal Rifles because as per general perception, Garhwalis are not considered adept in drill. However, all shortcomings and natural tendencies were overcome with hard work and determination. Other traits like grit and perseverance were also used to the hilt by the young bhullas and their drill instructors, to barter weaknesses for proficiency. Not only were they determined to come at par with the elite in the business but, had also made up their minds to beat them in their game. The standards displayed were unmatched and the entire service fraternity was awe struck by the stead-fastness, spirit and josh displayed by a very young group of soldiers who were attested just a few months ago.

CaptRaghavSwaroop Gupta too merits appreciation for his leadership and apt command of the Marching Contingent. The young officer was ably assisted by Sub Kunwar Singh, Sub Kailash Chandra Kotnala and a team of JCOs and Drill NCOs. Maj Sameer B Gujar, SM, was incharge of the Quarter Guard competition alongwith his team of Sub Abbal Singh and NCOs/ civilian staff of the Centre. They all displayed excellent organisational& creativity in ensuring very high standards of the Quarter Guard during the competition.

The result is actually a fruit of a tree which was sown a good about a year ago, by Maj Gen Sarath Chand, VSM, and his team of officers, when he was the Commandant. The tree was however, nurtured and brought to its full bloom with the consistent guidance and support of his successor, Brig VinodRaizada, SM and his able and motivated team. All the Battalions and Commanding Officers were more than forthcoming towards contributing manpower for the marching contingent and for administrative support.

Complimentary DO received from Lt Gen SubrotoMitra, AVSM, SM, VSM, GOC HQ Delhi Area is as under: -
