FLORENCE  NIGHTINGALE "LADY WITH THE LAMP "

 

Florence Nightingale is most revered as the  Founder of "Modern Nursing" .She was born in Italy on 12th May 1820, and was named Florence after the city where she was born. Florence belonged to a wealthy family, she was educated and fluent in many languages, skilled in mathematics and was far ahead of the times in understanding the importance of health data. Florence Nightingale believed that God wanted her to serve mankind and that she did with dedication. She set an example of compassion, commitment to patient care and diligent thoughtful hospital administration.

 

The creator of modern nursing Miss Florence Nightingale was honoured with the "Order of Merit" by King Edward for her distinguished, and worth mentioning services. On this occasion King Edward VII said it was a matter of pride for Britishers that a woman without Crown was ruling the world with her service. Because of her meritorious, distinguished and selfless service to mankind her birthday is celebrated as world Nurses’s Day.

 

NURSES : A FORCE FOR CHANGE : IMPROVING HEALTH SYSTEMS RESILIENCE

 

Improving the Health systems’ resilience is the International nurses day theme for the year 2016 “The Resilience of a health system is the capacity to respond, adapt and strengthen when exposed to a shock, such as a disease outbreak, natural disaster or conflict”. (Campbell etal)


Nursing encompasses autonomous and collaborative care of individuals of all ages, families, groups and communities, sick or well and in all settings. Nursing includes the promotion of health, prevention of illness, and the care of ill in varied health environments. Nurses and nursing are subject to growing pressures, including regular reviews and reorganisations, coping with changes to serve delivery and models of care, financial pressures , expanding scopes of practice and enhanced expectations of what a nurse workforce should achieve. We need to be flexible, adaptable and open to new forms of learning. The three areas in this regard are:

 

      (i)  Nurses role in relation to the adoption of digital technologies
      (ii)  Demonstrating quality & impact while providing patient care
      (iii)  Systems leadership

 

We can lead and support inter-professional education and collaboration practices to refine our expertise in health system. WHO has defined six building blocks of the health system. These are :

 

      • Adequate number of trained health workers
      • Available medicines
      • Robust health information system, including surveillance
      • Appropriate infra structure
      • Sufficient public financing
      • A strong public sector to deliver equitable, quality services.

 

There are many ways in which nurses are well placed to contribute to developing health system. They can have the most impact at the individual, health care team & organizational levels. The ability to be prepared for different challenges is increasingly being viewed as a key outcome for a successful organisation. The leadership teams have a key focus on this. The leaders have to root the bricks of adaptability, social support, purposefulness and confidence in the budding nightingales for strengthening nursing services in particular and making health system resilient at large.
